Mexico is a fascinating composite of distinct cultures and regions, including bustling metropolises like Mexico City, regions dedicated to luxury beach resorts, simply magical pueblos, and a genuinely friendly people who are passionate about life. As with all destinations, there are a few things to bear in mind before going.
1. Do visit the cenotes.
It would be a shame to visit Mexico and not explore at least one of these natural phenomenons. Cenotes are access points to subterranean waterways and underwater cave systems. Mexico is home to over 6,000 of these fascinating marvels and are major attractions for tourists and divers to explore. One of our favourites that we highly recommend is Kin-Ha Cenote in Puerto Morelos.
2. Don’t drink from the tap
Buying water or carrying a bottle that you refill whenever possible with clean water is invaluable in Mexico where it is advised to never drink the water directly from the tap.
3. Do go beyond the regular tourist haunts
While Cabo and Cancún are absolutely gorgeous tourist areas, it will be worth your while to explore some of the other regions of Mexico as well. Designated as pueblos mágicos (magic villages) by the government, these small villages have been highlighted by Mexico’s Secretariat of Tourism for their cultural appeal, historical importance, beauty, legends and folklore, festivals, culinary delights, art and more.
4. Don’t flush the toilet paper, unless you are in Cancún’s hotel zone
Mexico is similar to many countries in Latin America which do not advise the flushing of toilet paper. However, if you are in Cancun’s hotel zone, you can feel free to flush your toilet paper as normal as this region has its own water system.
5. Do remember Mexico is a gigantic country
Mexico is home to 129 million people spread across a vast 1.9 million square kilometres. Understanding its size is important because in such a large country there are great variations in both landscape and temparature. For instance, much of the country, including the capital Mexico City, is located at a high altitude and tend to be a bit cooler than expected, meanwhile coastal resort areas such as Cancún and Cabo do not have issues with high altitude and are generally hotter and sunnier.
