When most people think of Morocco they think of bustling markets with aromatic spices around every corner, camels in sun-baked deserts and an ancient past. Upon arrival, many travelers also find Morocco intriguing for yet another reason: it is one of the most visually stunning destinations in the world. Indeed, Morocco is a fascinating palette of shades, from the bright blue of Chefchaouen, to the old white-hued buildings of Casablanca, to the myriad of dyes in Marrakech’s colour-saturated markets.
Chefchaouen
Known as the Blue City, Chefchaouen’s medina (old city) has a tradition of painting its buildings blue and today is a major tourist destination in Morocco because of its striking visual appeal. Like many medinas, the old city is walled and is filled with many picturesque narrow and winding alleyways. Located in the north of the country, reaching the Chefchaouen can be quite the trek, especially if travelling from Marrakech but it is definitely worth it, if only to see how vivid the blue is up close – trust us, it’s more striking in person!
Casablanca
If Chefchaouen is the Blue City of Morocco, then Casablanca is its White City. In fact, its name translates to White House in English, so-named thanks to influences from Portugal and Spain. The white of the buildings of this coastal city makes for a striking skyline, especially against the bright blue of the ocean.
Marrakech
Marrakech’s medina is filled with labyrinth-like alleyways that you will enjoy wandering along, and it is where you can find foods, goods, African spices and more. While the entire market is a sensory experience altogether, arguably the most visually striking aspect is the abundance of clay pots filled with dyes in various bursts of colours. The sensory shock that such saturated colours presents is incredible, with the brightest oranges, the bluest blues, and vivid reds right before you, wherever you turn.
Morocco is filled with historic marvels, amazing cultures and is also incredibly visually appealing. Are you ready to visit this unforgettable destination?
