Phuket Food Guide: 5 Dishes You Should Try

Apart from its beautiful beaches and historic sites, Thailand is popularly known for its delicious foods. Although you might have had a taste of Thai food before at your local restaurants, nothing beats the authentic food experience in Thailand. Here are 5 dishes we recommend that you try while on your Thailand adventure in Phuket.

1. Tom Yum Goong

Tom Yum is a tasty hot and sour soup which usually includes shrimp. If you are not a fan of spicy dishes, this might not be the right choice for you. Along with the red chili which makes it spicy, this soup is made with lemongrass, lime leaves, galangal and shallots which give it its distinct aroma, as well as mushrooms and milk which all combine to create wonderfully unique flavours. It is served with rice or noodles and is highly recommended as an authentic Thai dish worth trying.

2. Pad Thai

This is a familiar dish to people all over the world, but it tastes better in Phuket! Many versions of this dish can be found in other countries but only in Thailand will you get the traditional dish in its purest form. It’s a tasty stir-fry made using rice noodles, shrimp, chicken or tofu, finished with grounded peanuts, fish sauce, chilli powder and sugar added to your preferred taste. When you get a taste, you’ll understand why this dish is recommended!

3. Gai Med Ma Moung (Chicken Cashew Nuts)

This dish is the perfect marriage of moist stir-fried chicken and warm, crunchy toasted cashews nuts. What makes this dish even more special is that the cashew nuts are locally grown in Phuket. It also wouldn’t be a Thai dish without a little spice. Served with jasmine rice, this can quickly become one of your favourite dishes.

4. Geng Kheaw Wan Gai (Green Curry Chicken)

Green Curry Chicken is a delicious fusion of spices, green curry paste (which gives it it’s special colour), chili, sugar, coconut milk and fish sauce. Along with fresh vegetables, a key ingredient is chicken. This is also served with jasmine rice. Your tastebuds will be happy and you will surely remember this dish for a long time.

5. Massaman Curry

This is a mild curry, which is great for those who don’t love spicy foods. It is a tasty blend of sweet, just a little spicy and creamy with hints of lime. It is as aromatic as it is flavourful. The preferred meats are often beef and chicken, but pork is also an option. It is served with steamed rice or noodles and will be sure to be on your list of favourites during your trip to Phuket.
