The art of packing is a necessary skill in today’s evolving world of travel where flexibility is key for adapting to the ever-changing rules. With increasingly more restrictive regulations on weight for flights, not to mention high excess baggage fees for checked luggage, it is essential that your packing is as light and precise as possible. With a little fore-planning, and these handy tips, you too can become a master of packing light.
Tips to remember:
1. Always keep a set of empty refillable 100ml bottles on hand
Keeping a set of refillable 100ml (3.4 oz) bottles at home is essential for short flights when you only need a carry-on. These can be used to transport liquids including eye contact solution, liquid allergy medicine, hair products, skin care products, liquid make up and more. Remember that these items should ideally all be kept together in a transparent bag so that customs can more easily identify them when searching through luggage.
2. Only pack the essentials
Realistically speaking, you could buy an umbrella anywhere in the world so this is an item that you don’t need to pack. You also don’t need 5 pairs of identical jeans. Limit denim – which tends to be quite heavy in any case – to only a few pairs and enquire about laundry at the resort upon arrival. Another good tip is instead of packing your heaviest clothing items, wear them on to the plane such as jeans, your heaviest shoes and outer wear to keep your luggage as light as possible.
3. Like to read? Invest in an e-reader
Books can add a surprising amount of weight to any suitcase or travellers’ backpack. Consider investing in a e-reader device such as the Kindle Paperwhite. Then feel free to travel with as many reads as you like, all stored in a thin device that’s almost as light as a mobile phone.
4. Make moving with luggage faster
How easy it is to handle your luggage really makes the difference when you are hurrying through the airport to make your flight, or traversing over cobblestones in Italy or France. One way to make this easier is to pack your heaviest items at the bottom of your suitcase as it will make it easier to roll. Another tip is to make sure that your luggage has 360-degree wheels as this will make it more agile and easier to turn around corners and manouevre around people.
